Latest Trends in Watches

Though there are several current trends in men’s watches, the overall trend is the bigger the better. Certainly, you’ll be hard pressed to find a male celebrity being spotted with a small watch. Other big trends include adding new functionalities to watches, such as dual-time features.

Designs

There is a definite rise in popularity in retro watches. Barrel and TV screen shapes are in, as well as watches styled like sailing watches, such as the Rolex Submariner. Larger numbers on watch faces are also growing steadily in popularity.

In the younger, indie crowds, we’re seeing a revival of the Casio Calculator watch, a lovingly ironic and iconic throwback from the 1980s.

Popular brands

As always the Swiss watchmakers dominate the world’s most popular watches, with heavyweights Rolex, Omega, Tissot and TAG Heuer still very much on top across the globe. That said, at the higher end of the market, watches of fashion houses Hermes and Chanel are still doing relatively well and will arguably always be considered fashionable.

At the lower end of the market, the Swatch seems to have diminished in popularity, as has the Casio Baby-G of the mid-90s. At the lower end of the market, the trend seems to be more towards watches that are styled on sports and recreation, like watches by surf brands such as Billabong and Quicksilver that are highly durable and water and weather resistant.

Materials

The hot material right now for watches is titanium, while the combination of steel and diamonds remains popular. Recently a lot more gold has surfaced among the higher end brands as the dominant material. Band materials are trending toward leather, with vintage leather and wide leather bands rapidly gaining in popularity.

Colourful bands are also highly in vogue at the moment, with bright yellow, red, orange and electric blue leather being opted for widely across both classic and casual watches.

Women’s watches

Women’s watches, like all women’s accessories, are often more about design than function. Current trends in women’s watches are harder to pick than men’s watches, with many of the world’s top fashion designers now designing watches.

Currently trendy brands include Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs, as well as Chanel, Hermes and Cartier at the higher end. Like men’s watches, larger watches are increasingly popular, while bright preppy colours also similarly in fashion. A prime example would be Jennifer Connolly’s red leather Hermes Cape Cod watch.

In terms of materials, platinum continues to be a frontrunner in popularity, while slightly rose gold is quickly picking up speed as well. For the younger crowd, bright colours and brands that connote youth and outdoor activities such as the surf brands, are also very much in vogue.

Up to the minute fashion

All said and done, watches play an important role in our overall fashion statement. So if you’re looking to keep up to the minute fashionable, make sure to keep your finger on the pulse of watch trends.
