First Ladies – Fashion Styles and Ratings

We Americans have to be honest in stating the fact that beauty and politics just don’t mix. Our nation values the characteristic of beauty in the field of entertainment but the political arena has never been an area of society that requires the attribute of attractiveness. Politics and leadership is primarily a domain for men who hold power, dominance, and riches. This is why attractiveness and beauty have never been a part of this area especially for women who are a part of this field.

Until recently this has been the norm but in this new era of women liberation all of this is changing.  Michelle Obama is the first African American First Lady in the history of this nation. Not only did her husband break down barriers and turn history upside down on its head, Michelle Obama has accomplished a major historical feat as well. With her newfound position the first lady must not only have the skills, the abilities, and the persona to navigate the position; she must also have the fashion sense and style to do so.

People want and even demand that the first lady looks good wherever she is and in whatever she wears. First Lady Obama is a beautiful woman and she wears a simple style that enhances her attractive good looks and she doesn’t look like a man or a prude while doing so. She has a unique ability to look like you’re everyday American female but at the same time she definitely stands out from the rest of the women in this country. The approval ratings clearly reveal that many people in this country love First Lady Obama and her style of fashion sense does help her to achieve the popularity and success that she now enjoys.

Laura Bush the wife of our former President Bush was also one of the most popular first ladies in our country’s history. Laura Bush’s fashion style was more elegant and regal. She didn’t come off as an average everyday female you would see out in public. First Lady Bush had a more eloquent style and presence about her. She wore clothing that set her apart and presented her with royalty and nobility. The average onlooker would not mistake this woman for a typical American female.

This is one of the reasons why First Lady Laura Bush has such high approval ratings even when ex President George Bush did not. First Lady Barbara Bush resided in the position of first lady during President George W. Bush’s time in office. Mrs. Bush was a regal older woman who commanded respect and admiration because of her position and her age. Her style of dress reflected these qualities about her. She wore elegant clothing that was appropriate for her status and her era in life.

Like her daughter-in-law First Lady Laura Bush, First Lady Barbara Bush also wore her clothing with regal and royalty. This woman had plenty of wisdom and grace and she definitely wore clothing that enhanced this aspect of her personality. First Lady Barbara Bush was considered one of the most admired and respected women in the world during her term. In hindsight her magnificent fashion style helped to play a role in this high approval rating.

Hillary Clinton is a woman known more for her power, her intellect, and her position in American society than her beauty and dressing sense. Even though this is the case, Secretary of State Clinton is an attractive woman who has a good command of fashion and style. Many critics may disagree but the fact remains is that ex First Lady Clinton fashion design and style does play a part to her longevity in the field of politics. Many people may not like Secretary of State Clinton but the fact remains she is a popular American icon and her dressing style reflects this.

First Lady Clinton wears a contemporary but professional look. Her clothing is alive and less regal than the Bush’s but you would never think she wasn’t a female of importance by the way she looks. First Lady Clinton wouldn’t win the best dressed First Lady in history but she wears her clothing and it reflects her power and position to the world.

Clothing for women who possess political power is important and what these women wear does matter. First Ladies not only represent the current President who resides in office for their time period; they are also a symbol for the American people and a representative of this nation. Their clothing must be of the best quality and their style must be of the finest standard because the world is watching them during their time in office.
