The majority of women would agree that the clothes we choose to both buy are wear are heavily influenced by current fashion trends. Not only does the action on the catwalks determine what is generally to be considered to be fashionable at any given time, it in turn influences what is available in the shops and therefore what we can go out there and spend our pennies on. As we are all more than well aware, fashion trends change constantly and it can sometimes be hard to keep on top of what is hot for any given season. One minute we’ll be running to the shops to buy a pair of ‘jeggings’ before they sell out and ten minutes later we’ll be contemplating a lacy number that looks suspicious like a cross between underwear and a pair of our grandma’s old net curtains.

But it isn’t only our clothing choices that are influenced by changes in fashion, as what we wear under our clothes is also subjects to trends. You would be seriously mistaken to believe that our lingerie is safe from the grasps of ever changing fashion trends – far from it!

One of the most noticeable fashion trends of the last few years has been an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. Both clothes and lingerie have been heavily influenced by days or yore, with every decade from the 40s right through to the 90s being represented in some way, shape or form. As far as lingerie is concerned, one of the most noticeable periods of inspiration has been the 1950s; the glamour and seduction of the 1950s has proved to be hugely influential on modern day lingerie designers and it is now impossible to peruse any selection of lingerie without coming across pieces that obviously channel old-school Hollywood glamour, meaning that this look is available on any budget.

As a consequence of this vintage revival slinky little thongs have been replaced by high-waisted French knickers – a welcome change for many women! Not only do these do a much better job of covering any wobbly bits you may have, the added material gives more opportunity for embellishments and frilly knicker-legs. To really go all out and dress yourself up like a 50s pin-up, lingerie sets comprising high-waisted French knickers and seductive plunge bras cut from soft silk or satin are an absolute must. If you’re feeling a little racy opt for black lingerie, but otherwise go for opulent jewel colours or this season’s must have shade – dusky pink.

Aside from the 50s, much lingerie this season is also taking inspiration from the 1980s and early 1990s, as lace lingerie is very much back in fashion. It can be tricky to make this look appear sultry rather than tacky, however, so make sure you steer clear of white and red and instead opt for deep purples, peachy pinks or everyone’s favourite – black.

Another hot look in the world of lingerie this season is vintage florals. Delicate, floral prints look fabulous on fun and flirty lingerie sets, especially those crafted from sheer fabrics and finished with ribbons and bows. This is a great lingerie look to get you in the mood for Spring – even if it is snowing outside and you’re wrapped up warm, you can bring some sunshine into your day with some bright and flowery underwear.

Whether you are looking for cheap designer underwear for a special occasion or just something to wear on an every day basis, remember that this season is the time to be taking inspiration from years gone by. So get out there, channel your inner vintage princess and find the retro lingerie looks that works for you!
